DIY Model Train TablePlanning Your DIY Model Train Table After you have had your railroad for a little while you may consider having a go at a DIY model train table. A starting point may be for you to lay the set out an unused table or a plywood sheet. You will soon realise, however, that this has its drawbacks.
For example if you are using a table then when it comes to wiring in a set of points or some switches then you may not want to drill through the table. This is the reason why many modellers will build a DIY model train table. This means that if you have a DIY model train table then you can wire it as you wish and you can build model train scenery directly on the table.
A major part of the planning stage is to decide upon the size of your model train layout. You should also consider the height at which you are to build your model railway. Once you have decided on a height then you can work out the depth that you are able to reach from a standing position. For this reason a typically diy model train table would be situated about 4 feet high. Once you have built up the scenery and like then there it may be a few inches higher yet you would still be able to reach over onto the track to recover any vehicles that may derail.
